city, winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, northwestern India. It lies along the Tawi River, south of Srinagar, and to the north is the Siwalik Range. Once the capital of the Dogra Rajput dynasty, Jammu became part of Ranjit Singh's domain in the 19th century. It is now a railroad and manufacturing centre. The University of Jammu was established in 1969. The surrounding area produces wheat, rice, corn (maize), and barley. Pop. (1981) city, 206,135; metropolitan area, 223,361.
