Meaning of JAMSHEDPUR in English

town, Singhbhum district, Bihar state, northeastern India, at the junction of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers. Sometimes called Tatanagar, the city was founded by the industrialist Dorabji Jamsetji Tata in 1907 and rapidly grew in importance. The second largest town in the state, it is a major rail and road junction. Industries include India's principal ironworks and steelworks, a vehicle assembly plant, and the manufacture of agricultural implements, enamelled ironware, and locomotive engine parts. It houses the National Metallurgical Laboratory and eight colleges affiliated with Ranchi University. Pop. (1981) town, 457,061; metropolitan area, 669,580.
