city, Katowice wojewdztwo (province), south-central Poland. It was founded in the 18th century when rich deposits of zinc and lead ore and beds of coal were discovered nearby. It is an important coal-mining and industrial city in eastern Upper Silesia, with large chemical factories and several massive electricity-generating stations, as well as a ceramic kiln and cement plant. Pop. (1987 est.) 96,800.
