town, Honolulu County, northeastern Oahu Island, Hawaii, U.S. Spreading from the foothills of the Koolau Range to Kaneohe Bay, it is primarily residential and is the seat of Windward Community College (1972). Like neighbouring Kailua to the east, the Kaneohe (meaning bamboo husband) area was once the residence of the island's early kings. Local attractions include Waikalua, legendary home of a Tahitian prince who introduced the hula to the Hawaiians. Pop. (1990) 35,448.
