Meaning of KEWANEE in English

city, Henry county, northwestern Illinois, U.S. Founded in 1854 by settlers from New England after the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and originally called Berriam, it was renamed Kewanee (Indian for prairie chicken). In 1924 it absorbed the nearby community of Wethersfield. The economy is based on agriculture (notably hogs) and manufacturing (heating equipment, farm implements, and work clothes). Black Hawk CollegeEast Campus was established in Kewanee in 1967. Inc. village, 1872; city, 1897. Pop. (1990) 12,969.
