city, Moscow oblast (province), western Russia. First documented in 1234, it was for long a fort between the principalities of Moscow and Tver. In the 18th century, after a period of unimportance, Klin became a transport centre on the MoscowSt. Petersburg road. In Soviet times the city became one of the earliest centres of the chemical industry, producing synthetic fibre, glass, and laboratory instruments. A museum devoted to the Russian composer Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky is located within the city. Pop. (1993 est.) 95,100.
