Meaning of KOSRAE in English

also called Kusaie, formerly Ualan, or Strong Island, easternmost of the Caroline Islands in the Federated States of Micronesia, western Pacific Ocean. Kosrae is volcanic in origin and is hilly, rising to Mount Crozier (2,061 feet ). It has a land area of 42 square miles (109 square km). Fertile and well-watered, Kosrae produces taros, oranges, breadfruit, and bananas and has valuable stands of timber. There are deposits of bauxite and guano. Of its two harbours, Lele, an old whaling port, is the better. It has ruins of ancient stone walls and dikes. Pop. (1985 est.) 6,462.
