KRAMATORSK

city, Donetsk oblast (province), eastern Ukraine. It lies on the bank of the Kazyonny Torets, which is a tributary of the north Donets River. The city developed from the end of the 19th century with the growth of its metallurgical industry. Modern Kramatorsk makes iron and steel and is one of the largest centres in Ukraine for heavy machinery and machine tools for the metallurgical, mining, power, and chemical industries. Manufactured goods include presses, cranes, turbine rotors, and self-propelled excavators. There are railway repair shops, ceramic works, and coke-chemical and cement-making undertakings. Pop. (1991 est.) 201,300.
