city in Serbia, Yugoslavia, lying along the north bank of the Ibar River in a fertile agricultural region. The city's heavy industry includes the manufacture of railway rolling stock, trucks, wagons, ceramics, and firebrick. There is also a museum with a fresco gallery specializing in the art of the Raska school monasteries, several of which are located nearby. Just 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Kraljevo is Zica Monastery, built in 120720 as the seat of the first Serbian archbishop and containing fine frescoes of the Raska school of painting; in it Serbian kings were crowned in the early Middle Ages. Zica was partially damaged during World War II. The famous monastery of Studenica is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Kraljevo, under the shadow of Golija Mountain, amid beautiful scenery; one of the oldest and best-known Serbian medieval monasteries, it comprises three churches dating from the 12th to the 14th century. The Church of the Virgin, built in 1190 by Stephen Nemanja, founder of the Serbian state, is a diminutive church of white marble with delicate ornamentation; its frescoes date from the beginning of the 13th century. The King's Church, built by King Milutin in 1315, also has fine frescoes. Pop. (1981) 52,485.
