in full Kymen Lni, Swedish Kymmene Ln, lni (province), southeastern Finland, bounded by the Gulf of Finland (south) and by Russia (east). The province has a land area of 4,145 square miles (10,736 square km) and includes the southern section of the Saimaa lake system, which is drained by the Kymijoki and Vuoksi rivers. Kymijoki valley industries include timber processing and wood products, iron and steel, textile milling, and granite and limestone quarrying. Kouvola, the administrative capital, has paper and pulp mills and is a major rail junction. Kotka and Hamina are two of the most important ports on the Gulf of Finland. The lni was created in 1944 and encompasses the part of former Viipuri (present Vyborg) county that was not ceded to the U.S.S.R. Pop. (1991 est.) 334,905.
