LAATSTE NIEUWS, HET

(Flemish: The Latest News), daily newspaper published in Brussels, the largest daily in Belgium. It was founded in 1888 to serve Flemish-speaking citizens. A liberal paper with a serious approach to national and international news, it also publishes such features as comic strips, crossword puzzles, and cartoons. In the 1960s a large and attractive sports section of several pages was included. It is a morning paper using a seven-column page and having a dignified makeup style, with column and cutoff rules separating stories rather than columns.
