city, Lake county, extreme northeastern Illinois, U.S., on Lake Michigan, a northern suburb of Chicago. Settled in 1835, it was laid out in 1856, and its wooded lakeshore became the setting for numerous estates. Special areas were reserved for the establishment of three educational institutions: Lake Forest College, opened in 1857; Lake Forest Academy, in 1861; and Ferry Hall (now a part of the academy), in 1869. Also in the city are Barat College (1858) and Woodlands Academy (preparatory), operated by the Society of the Sacred Heart. Inc. 1861. Pop. (1990) 17,836.
