public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Langston, Okla., U.S. It is Oklahoma's only historically black institution of higher learning and has land-grant status. It includes divisions of Applied Sciences and Arts and Sciences and schools of Business, Education and Behavioral Sciences, and Nursing and Health Professions. In 1989 it began offering graduate programs leading to a Master of Education degree. The Airway Science program trains aviation personnel, including pilots, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration. The university maintains its Urban Centers in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Total enrollment is approximately 4,000. Langston University was established by Oklahoma's territorial legislature in 1887 as the Colored Agricultural and Normal (teacher-training) University. It was coeducational from the outset. African-American settlers raised money to buy land for the school, which opened in a Presbyterian church in 1890. It was renamed Langston University in 1941. E. (Kika) de la Garza Institute for Goat Research is located there, and the university also conducts extension and research programs.
