born July 5, 1885, Bordeaux, Fr. died Jan. 24, 1962, Paris French painter, sculptor, writer, and educator who was an outstanding critic and teacher of modern art. Largely self-taught, Lhote was initially associated with Fauvism, but his mature painting style (i.e., Rugby, 1917; Muse d'Art Moderne, Paris) is Cubist in manner. In 1922 he founded his own influential art school. As a critic he worked for La Nouvelle Revue Franaise until 1940, and he also wrote Trait du paysage (1939; Treatise on Landscape Painting) and Trait de la figure (1950; Treatise on Figure Painting).
