the existence of coordination compounds having the same atomic composition but differing in the attachment to the central atom of a ligand group; certain such groups, called ambident ligands, contain more than one atom by which they may bind to the central atom: the nitrogen-oxygen group NO2, for example, binds through its nitrogen atom in nitro compounds but through one of its oxygen atoms in nitrito compounds.
