chartered city, Batangas province, southwestern Luzon, Philippines. Formerly a Spanish military headquarters, it is a market town for a fruit-growing region. Lipa was rebuilt (including its cathedral) after a disastrous volcanic eruption in 1754 and again after its virtual destruction under Japanese occupation in World War II. Industries include clothing manufacture and some agricultural processing. The site of a military air base and a citrus experimental station, Lipa is linked to other parts of the island by railway and road. Inc. 1947. Pop. (1980) 121,166.
