administrative district, west central Portugal, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean (west and south) and by the Tagus River and its estuary (southeast). It has an area of 1,066 sq mi (2,762 sq km). Principal occupations outside Lisbon (q.v.), the district and national capital, are agriculture and fishing, ironworking, and tourism. A disastrous flood in November 1967 caused over 450 deaths and much damage in the district. Pop. (1992 est.) 2,062,300.
