born Oct. 15, 1887, Spalding, Mo., U.S. died Dec. 15, 1975, Palo Alto, Calif. in full Chester Ray Longwell American geologist, known for his studies of the western United States. After serving as a member of the Oklahoma Geological Survey from 1916 to 1920, Longwell joined the U.S. Geological Survey and became a faculty member at Yale University. In 1956 he became a research associate at Stanford University; he later became a professor there. Longwell's work included field research and geologic mapping, studies of Basin and Range geology and structure, and Precambrian, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic geologic history. He was a coauthor of Physical Geology (1932) and Introduction to Physical Geology (1955).
