LOS BAOS


Meaning of LOS BAOS in English

resort town, southwestern Luzon, Philippines. Near the southern shore of Laguna de Bay, it was named Los Baos (The Baths) for the thermal springs that flow from the base of Mount Makiling. The waters are piped into the town's numerous hotels. Los Baos was the site of a U.S. air base and later of a Japanese concentration camp that was captured by U.S. forces on Feb. 23, 1945. It is the site of the College of Agriculture of the University of the Philippines. In the 1960s the International Rice Research Institute, headquartered there, developed IR8, a high-yielding strain that has been called a miracle rice. Pop. (1980) mun., 49,555.
