LYNN LAKE

Meaning of LYNN LAKE in English

mining village, northwestern Manitoba, Canada, in the subarctic Reindeer Lake region. It developed after copper and nickel deposits were discovered in the vicinity of Lynn Lake in 1941. The Sherritt Gordon Mining Company, following the abandonment of its copper-mining operations at Sherridon (120 miles south) in 1951, in collaboration with the provincial government, moved the Sherridon townsite by tractor-train over the frozen northland to Lynn Lake. It was later connected to The Pas (south) by a branch of the Canadian National Railway (1953) and by Canadian Pacific Airlines. Lynn Lake produces much of the province's nickel-ore output and manufactures ammonium sulfate fertilizer. Gold and silver are also mined locally. Pop. (1991) 834.
