MAYNARD, FRANOIS

born 1582/83, Toulouse, Fr. died Dec. 28, 1646 Maynard also spelled Mainard French poet, leading disciple of Franois de Malherbe and, like him, concerned with the clarification of the French language. He is commonly confused with Franois Mnard (15891631) of Nmes, also a poet. Maynard obtained a post with Marguerite de Valois in 1605 and began writing pastoral poetry. Philandre belongs to this period, although it was not printed until 1619. He attached himself to Malherbe and helped to spread the latter's ideas on the necessity of a standard grammar, the elimination of personal sentiments in writing, and an objective treatment of the subject matter. Maynard held office in the presidial court of Aurillac from 1611 to 1628. He failed to win the esteem of Cardinal de Richelieu, however, and spent many years in the country in retirement. He was made a member of the French Academy in 1634. Returning to Paris after Richelieu's death, he found that literary fashion had changed; he retired to the country again. As a poet, Maynard is inferior to Honorat de Racan, another Malherbian disciple. Yet he is noted for carrying on the tradition of clarity, power, and perfection of form.
