MONTIJO

town and concelho (municipality), Setbal district, Portugal, directly east of Lisbon across the mar de palha (straw sea) of the Tagus River. Industries include cork processing, manufacture of fertilizers and hardware, building of small ships, distilling, and fruit preserving. The town is an agricultural centre, and its oyster fisheries are important. The empress Eugnie, consort of Napoleon III, was countess of Montijo. Pop. (1991 prelim.) town, 23,407; concelho, 36,268.
