Meaning of MONTMORENCY, MATHIEU II, BARON DE in English

born c. 1174 died Nov. 24, 1230 French noble prominent in the service of three kings. Montmorency first fought under Philip II against the English in Normandy from 1202 to 1214. In 1215 he joined the crusade against the Albigensian heretics in southern France. On his return he was made constable of France in 1218, an office he strengthened by adding to its duties the command of the army. Montmorency also served under Louis VIII in his war against the English in southwest France in 1224. The army he commanded conquered large territories, including Limousin, Prigord, and La Rochelle. When Louis turned his attention to the Albigenses in 1226, Montmorency again followed him. Shortly before his death Louis asked Montmorency to protect his young son, the future Louis IX. Montmorency was faithful to his promise. When Blanche of Castile, regent during her son's minority, was threatened by a serious feudal revolt in the years after 1226, Montmorency helped force the nobles to submit.
