city, Osaka fu (urban prefecture), Honshu, Japan, on the southern bank of the Yodo River. A prosperous post town on the Osaka Highway during the Tokugawa period (16031867), it rapidly industrialized with the opening of a railway to Osaka in 1910. Manufactures include electrical machinery and appliances, textiles, and processed foods. The city is also a residential suburb of the Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Pop. (1989 est.) 159,186.
