ice-covered volcanic massif, southeastern Iceland. It lies at the southern end of the giant ice field of Vatnajkull (q.v.). Its highest peak, Mount Hvannadals, reaches an elevation of 6,952 feet (2,119 m) above sea level and is also the highest peak in Iceland.
