French literary prize awarded to the author of an outstanding original novel published during the previous year. Named for Thophraste Renaudot (1586?-1653), who founded La Gazette (later La Gazette de France), an influential weekly newspaper, the prize was established in 1925 and first awarded in 1926. Like the Prix Goncourt, with which it competes, the Prix Renaudot is awarded annually at a ceremony in a Parisian restaurant. Its winners have included Michel del Castillo, douard Glissant, Michel Butor, Jean Cayrol, Louis Aragon, Louis-Ferdinand Cline, and Marcel Aym.
