A historic centre of trade between Delhi and Rajasthan, Rewari is said to have been built by Raja Rao (or Rewat), who named it after his daughter Rewati. It is a major commercial and transport centre and an agricultural market. There is some light industry. Constituted a municipality in 1867, it has five colleges affiliated with Kurukshetra University. Pop. (1981) 51,562.
