Meaning of RHEINE in English

city, North RhineWestphalia Land (state), northwestern Germany, on the Ems River. First mentioned in 838 and chartered in 1327, it suffered in the Thirty Years' War (161848) and was severely damaged in World War II, but it has been rebuilt. It lies in a picturesque hilly setting and is the site of the Gottesgabe Bath, a small but popular saline spa. St. Dionysius' Church (1484; restored 1957), Bentlage Castle (1437), the Falkenhof (with museum), and the main square with its Rococo houses are of interest. A rail junction with a secondary airport, the city has an important textile industry and manufactures machinery. Pop. (1991 est.) 70,452.
