RHEINHAUSEN

Meaning of RHEINHAUSEN in English

former town, North RhineWestphalia Land (state), northwestern Germany, on the west bank of the Rhine. In 1975 it became part of the city of Duisburg. The town grew up to house workers at a large iron and steel plant established by Friedrich A. Krupp in 1898. Rheinhausen was formed in 1928 by the amalgamation of Friemersheim and Hochemmerich and was chartered in 1934. Neither the town nor the plant suffered serious damage in World War II, and the steelworks, still in the possession of the Krupp family, have been fully restored. There are docks to handle imported iron ore, fuel, and limestone. Other industries include brewing and distilling and the manufacture of mining and chemical equipment, cement goods, and textiles.
