amt (county), Denmark, covering a rectangular area (1,874 square miles [4,853 square km]) that is bounded by the smooth dune and lagoon coast of western Jutland between Nissum Bay in the north and Ringkbing Fjord in the south, and extending about 40 miles (65 km) inland. The soil is mainly sandy and poor with tracts of unreclaimed heath but supports mixed agriculture. The principal cities, Herning and Holstebro, lie inland. Struer, Lemvig, and Ringkbing (the county seat, founded in the 14th century) are minor ports and resorts. Pop. (1989 est.) 266,834.
