private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Loretto, Pennsylvania, U.S. It is sponsored by the Franciscans of the Third Order Regular of the Roman Catholic church. This liberal arts college offers a range of bachelor's degree programs in such areas as business, education, health professions, and arts and sciences. There are also master's degree programs in business administration and in human-resource management and industrial relations. Total enrollment is approximately 2,000. The college was founded in 1847 by six Franciscan friars from Ireland. It was one of the first coeducational Catholic colleges in the United States. The campus is home to the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.
