Meaning of SAINT-HYACINTHE in English

city, Montrgie region, southern Quebec province, Canada. It is situated along the Yamaska River. Founded in 1760, it was named after Hyacinthe de Lorme, who bought the territory in 1753. The city, which lies along the Canadian National Railway and Trans-Canada Highway, 30 miles (48 km) east of Montreal, is the commercial, cultural, and administrative centre of the nearby agricultural area. Its manufactures include textiles, organs, clothing, railway car wheels, boilers, paper products, chocolate, and shoes. Saint-Hyacinthe is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishopric and site of a classical college, dairy school, agricultural school, and school of veterinary medicine. Inc. town, 1849; city, 1857. Pop. (1991) 39,292.
