Founded in 1647 as a freehold of the Jesuits, the community was long an agricultural centre and developed in the late 19th century with the coming of the railway. It was named for Lambert Clossesoldier, Indian fighter, and associate of Paul de Chomedy, founder of Montreal. Saint-Lambert, a suburb of Montreal, is the site of the easternmost lock of the St. Lawrence Seaway, which enables ships to bypass the Lachine Rapids. Electrical machinery, millwork, metal products, sashes and doors, and fountain pens are among its varied manufactures. Inc. city, 1921. Pop. (1991) 20,976.
