city, Montral region, southern Quebec province, Canada. It is a western suburb of Montreal city, in the centre of Montreal Island in the St. Lawrence River. Founded in 1845 on the site of a mission that dated to 1720, it developed with the growth of Montreal. After ceding part of its eastern section to Montreal in 1952, the city annexed Saint-Laurent parish in 1954, quadrupling its area. In 1959 it joined the newly established Montreal Metropolitan Corporation. Industries in Saint-Laurent manufacture aircraft, railway cars, and foundry and other products. Two airports, both national transcontinental railways, and several freeways serve the city. Inc. town, 1893; city, 1955. Pop. (1991) 72,402.
