English Simoom, small and extremely hot and dry local wind in Arabia and the Sahara. Its temperature often reaches 55 C (about 130 F), and its humidity sometimes falls under 10 percent. Intensive ground heating under a cloudless sky causes the samum. The Arabic word means poison wind and refers to the wind's tendency to cause heatstroke.
