city, La Corua provincia, in the comunidad autnoma (autonomous community) of Galicia, northwestern Spain. The city is the chief centre of Riveira (Ribeira) municipality. It lies on the Arosa Inlet across the inlet from Villagarca de Arosa, in the coastal zone. Remains of Roman fortifications and of a Phoenician port, La Covasa, attest to early occupation of the site, although the city was not established in its modern sense until the 19th century. Santa Eugenia is a seaside resort and fishing port, with factories for canning seafood, processing fish and flour, and building marine motors. Pop. (1981) 23,081.
