SARNATH

archaeological site north of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, where, according to tradition, the Buddha first began teaching his followers; the site contains a stupa (shrine) and the famous lion-capital memorial pillar, which was erected by the 3rd-century-BC Maurya emperor Asoka and is now the state emblem of India.
