any of a group of semiantique, Caucasian pileless floor coverings woven in the Soumak manner. The typical pattern consists of rows of dragon forms derived from the much older Dragon rugs. In the Silehs the dragon assumes the shape of a block letter S or numeral 2; the tail is represented as a mere line. A motif may be repeated six times and then six times again between the curves of the body. Scale motifs resembling tiny S-forms cover the body. The border of the rug is rudimentary. Sileh rugs were usually woven as two pieces on a narrow loom and sewn together later. As a rule they are entirely of wool and are very colourful.
