SINGEN

Meaning of SINGEN in English

in full Singen Am Hohentwiel, city, Baden-Wrttemberg Land (state), southwestern Germany. It lies along the Aach River in the Hegau (a region of extinct volcanic mountains), at the eastern foot of the Hohentwiel (2,251 feet ). First mentioned in 787 as Sisinga, the village grew up near a mighty fortress on the Hohentwiel that is the setting of Viktor von Scheffel's novel Ekkehard (1855?). The Hohentwiel, with Singen, became an enclave of Wrttemberg in 1538, and the fortress was often besieged until it was destroyed by the French in 1800. Singen, chartered in 1899, is an industrial city with an aluminum rolling mill and some light manufactures. Pop. (1991 est.) 43,689.
