SMOKY BAT

Meaning of SMOKY BAT in English

either of the two species of bat that constitute the family Furipteridae (genera Furipterus and Amorphochilus), found in the Central and South American tropics. Small and delicately built, smoky bats range in size from about 3.7 to 5.8 cm (1.5 to 2 inches), have tails about 2.4 to 3.6 cm in length, and weigh about 3 to 5 g (0.10 to 0.16 ounces). These slaty-gray or brown bats are notable for their reduced thumb, which is covered by the wing membranes right up to the base of the functionless claw. Smoky bats are rarely seen, and very little is known about their habits.
