SOGN OG FJORDANE

Meaning of SOGN OG FJORDANE in English

fylke (county), western Norway, bordering the North Sea. Its inland extension includes the Jostedals Glacier and part of the Jotunheim Mountains. In the northern part of the fylke is Nord Fjord, which penetrates 55 miles (90 km) inland, and in the south is Norway's longest fjord, Sogn Fjord (q.v.). Centrally located on the northern bank of Sogn Fjord is the village of Leikanger, administrative centre of the fylke. There are many small offshore islands where fishing is the principal occupation. Along the fjord banks, especially in the interior, agriculture (grains and fruits) is important. Because of its rugged and picturesque scenery, Sogn og Fjordane has become one of Norway's chief tourist areas. Hydroelectric power has enabled industry to develop; aluminum production, centred at rdal, is significant. Nearby, in the Jotunheim Mountains, is Vettisfossen, Norway's second highest waterfall, with a vertical drop of 902 feet (275 m). Area 7,195 square miles (18,634 square km). Pop. (1994 est.) 107,576.
