souari also spelled Swarri, also called Butternut, or Pekea Nut, any of the seeds borne in large, clustered fruits of trees of the genus Caryocar (family Caryocaraceae). C. nuciferum, from northern South America, is typical. Its coconut-sized fruit has four nuts, surrounded by edible flesh. The warty, red, hard-shelled, kidney-shaped nuts have a rich flavour and contain a fatty oil that is extracted and used in cooking.
