city, north-central Bangladesh. It lies just east of the Jamuna (Brahmaputra) River. Tangail is an important handloom and cotton-weaving centre and serves as a trading centre for the rice, jute, and oilseeds that are grown in the surrounding agricultural area. The city is connected by road with Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Jamalpur. It has several colleges affiliated with the University of Dhaka. Pop. (1981) 77,518.
