Meaning of JAMALPUR in English

city, north-central Bangladesh, on the west bank of the Old Brahmaputra River. An important trade centre for rice, jute, oilseeds, sugarcane, and tobacco, it is connected by rail with Mymensingh, Jagannathganj Ghat, and Bahadurabad Ghat and by road with Mymensingh and Tangail and with Meghalaya, India. It has two colleges affiliated with the University of Dhaka. The surrounding region is largely agricultural; chief crops are rice, jute, wheat, sugarcane, oilseeds, and pulses. Pop. (1981 prelim.) 89,847. town, central Bihar state, northeastern India. It is situated at the foot of the Monghyr Ghat (hills) near the Ganges River. The town was established in 1862 as a railway settlement and contains large locomotive engineering workshops, as well as major iron and steel foundries. Slate quarries are located to the southwest. Jamalpur has two colleges affiliated with Bhagalpur University. It was constituted a municipality in 1883. Pop. (1981) 78,356.
