town and seat of Komrom-Esztergom megye (county), northwestern Hungary. Lying in the valley of the Gallei River, between the Vrtes Hills to the south and the Gerecse Mountains to the northeast, the town is Hungary's main mining centre and is located on the country's largest lignite deposit, the Tatabnya-Oroszlny Basin. Mining began there on the outskirts of the existing settlements, including Felsogalla, Alsgalla, Bnhida, and others, which were incorporated into Tatabnya in 1902, when it was given the status of a separate village. There is a limestone quarry and marlpit. Other heavy industry in Tatabnya includes an aluminum plant, a cement and lime works, and several large thermoelectric-power stations. The settlements of which Tatabnya was constituted stretch out approximately 7 miles (11 km) in length. The newest district, Ujvros (New Town), is on the west. Tatabnya has road and rail connections with Budapest, 35 miles (56 km) to the east. Pop. (1992 est.) 73,916.
