megye (county), northwestern Hungary. The megye extends southward from the Danube River and the Slovakian frontier. It has a mixed agricultural-industrial economic base. Sugar beets and peaches are important crops, and there is a sugar beet mill at cs. Tatabnya (q.v.), the megye seat, is Hungary's chief mining (lignite) centre. Considerable industrial activity is concentrated along the Danube River. At Lbatlan cement, paper, and prefabricated building components are manufactured. Szony has an oil refinery linked by pipeline with the Zala field. Almsfzito also refines oil and has an aluminum works, while Nyergesjfalu specializes in plastics. Limestone is quarried at Dunaalms and red marble at Stto. Dorog and Oroszlny are coal-mining towns. Around Tata are woodlands and nature reserves, with a national sports centre, training camp, and athletic school nearby. The town of Komrom is a rail centre and Danube port. Area 869 square miles (2,251 square km). Pop. (1991 est.) 314,014.
