also spelled Tingrla, town, administrative centre (since 1980), of Tengrla dpartement, extreme northern Cte d'Ivoire, situated on a road connecting the Cte d'Ivoire town of Boundiali (south) with the country of Mali (north). The town serves as a centre for international trade among Cte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta). The dpartement is a densely-populated wooded savanna area known for cotton, corn (maize), yams, sorghum, linseed oil, and cattle raising. The Senufo people, one of 60 ethnic groups in Cte d'Ivoire, constitute the town's population. Pop. (1975) town, 8,795; department, 35,829.
