TORRES ISLANDS

northernmost group of Vanuatu, southwestern Pacific Ocean, 60 miles (100 km) north of Espiritu Santo. They extend for 35 miles (56 km) and comprise Hiu (Hiw), the largest (10 miles long by 2 miles wide), Tgua, Loh, Metoma, and Toga. Hiu rises to the highest point, 1,201 feet (366 m). The islands are fringed by coral reefs and are populated by Polynesians. Pop. (1979) 325.
