Meaning of TOTNES in English

town (parish), South Hams district, administrative and historic county of Devon, England, on the River Dart. Totnes dates from Saxon times and is listed in Domesday Book (1086). Its earliest charter is dated 1205, and it became a walled town commanding the lowest crossing of the river. The keep and upper walls of the Norman castle still stand, and close by are the remains of St. Mary's priory. Industries include brewing and food processing. Pop. (1991) 6,929.
