St. James's parish church dates from the 14th century; other notable buildings include the town hall (1899) and the county hall (1940). The fine woolen cloths manufactured by the town are famous. Its diversified industries also include light engineering, brewing, bedding manufacture, food processing, creameries, and printing. Trowbridge is the county town (seat) of Wiltshire. Pop. (1991) 29,334.
